DID YOU KNOW
The Joker playing card was also known as the ‘Jolly Joker.‘ Standard decks normally contained two extra ‘wild’ cards, each depicting a traditional court jester that could be used to trump any natural card.
Depending on the game, a Joker card can have either an adverse or helpful outcome for a player. They first appeared in printed American decks in 1867 and by 1880 British card makers also followed this trend.
No industry-wide design
Few games proactively use them and some surmise, this is the reason the Joker is the only card that lacks a standard, industry-wide design. Most standard decks have 2 Jokers per pack however a number of European card packs have as many as 6. Jokers are sometimes used as a replacement for lost or damaged cards.
