DID YOU KNOW

Batman’s greatest nemesis ‘The Joker’ is said to be based on actor Conrad Veidt’s character ‘Gwynplaine’ from the 1928 Leni-directed “The Man Who Laughs.” Although Jerry Robinson, Bill Finger and Bob Kane disagree on their respective roles in the 1940 creation of the Joker they all agreed that his exaggerated smile was inspired by a photograph of Veidt from the film.

In his memoir Jerry and The Joker: Adventures and Comic Art published by Dark Horse Books on 15 August, 2017 Robinson said —

I always thought that heroes were essentially dull. Villains were more exotic and could do more interesting things.
