DO YOU REMEMBER

Your first video game experience? My parents brought us a Commodore 64 that had 6 games bundled together (Arcadia, B.C. Bill, Pedro, Cosmic Cruiser, Invaders and 3D Jumpin Jack) as a ‘Value Pack.’

Each game came as a ‘cassette’ that was loaded into the player. My memory is
of waiting for the game to load more than playing the actual game. Once the command to load the game was entered, I’d sit back — waiting, and hoping it would and not crash otherwise you had to repeat the process all over again. I also hoped the cassette wouldn’t be chewed up by the cassette player which meant even MORE time fixing the tape and repeating the process.

No Parental Lock Out System Required
My brother and I only had 30 mins game time, mainly at the weekend so long load times or straightening out chewed tape felt like lost time! We’d play games that had short loading times like ‘Jumpin Jack‘ (a 3D Frogger clone) and ‘Invaders‘ (a Space Invaders clone).

I also remember playing River Raid, Chopper Commander and Pitfall on a friend’s Atari; it wasn’t just the addictive game play (because they needed to be with limited graphics capabilities) but also because of the 8-bit sounds and simple colours. It was magical. Photo Credit: Computer History Museum
