DID YOU KNOW

Donkey Kong was originally set to be a Popeye video game? Mario was Popeye, Pauline was Olive Oyl and Donkey Kong was Bluto. Japanese video game designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto was unable to acquire the licence for the Popeye franchise so decided to stick with the three-way love triangle and Popeye became ‘Jumpman’ and later Mario.

King Features Syndicate Inc held the rights to the Popeye franchise and later licenced the characters to Nintendo. From that, the Popeye video game was created however it was too similar to Donkey Kong and players dismissed it as a Donkey Kong clone. Photo Credits: Nintendo
