The term ‘Joker’ has its origins in the germanic spelling of Euchre (Juker or Juckerspiel). Around 1860 the Joker card evolved in Euchre to replace the blank card being used as the ‘best bower’ or highest trump card.
Three years later, Samuel Hart printed the first illustrated ‘Best Bower’ card he called ‘Imperial Bower.’ Pictures were later replaced with clowns or jesters though it wasn’t until around 1875 that the Joker card was added to a Poker deck to represent a wild card. Most modern decks have two Jokers, one red and one black to match the suit colours. Photo Credit: World Web Playing Card Museum
