DID YOU KNOW
A wash aka the Corgi shuffle or a scramble is often made at the beginning of a card game when the deck is still in the order it was packaged in. Washing is done so everyone (players and dealer alike) are satisfied that they’re about to play in a fair game.
Washing the Deck
To wash a deck of cards, a dealer spreads them all face down on the table in two rows. S/he uses their hands to slide the cards around the table in a circular motion and from time to time, they might randomly change their motion moving the cards clockwise, counter-clockwise, away or toward themselves.
After a few minutes of this, the cards are gathered back up into a stack and squared up. The deck is now ready for some normal shuffling. This process of ‘washing’ mixes the cards up more quickly than traditional riffle shuffles. Photo Credit: Jack Hamilton
