Sport has a long history in the video game industry. Beginning in 1937, the manufacturer Bryan’s Automatic Machine Works released ‘All Sports’ an arcade game and during the same period also produced ‘Ball Sport’ along with 11 other game types.
In 1991 ‘World Class Rugby’ was developed by Denton Designs and published by Audiogenic Software for multiple platforms in Europe and Australia. It was released to coincide with the 1991 Rugby World Cup. The game was eventually licensed to Japanese publisher Misawa and two years later they produced a Super Nintendo version of it.
Aussie Tru Blu
Here in Australia, Audiogenic published ‘ET’s Rugby League’ for Amiga in 1992. The game was promoted by Australian rugby player Andrew “ET” Ettinghausen. He was a former Australian professional Rugby League player who played his First Grade Australian Club football for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and retired at the end of the 2000 NRL season.
Career Highlights
Ettingshausen played 328 first grade games for the club and held the New South Wales Rugby League, Australian Rugby League, Super League and National Rugby League records for the most games at a single club.
Since its publication, a number of other Rugby League video games have been produced like Rugby League Live 4 and published by Tru Blu Entertainment in conjunction with the National Rugby League. Tru Blu Entertainment is the publishing arm of the long-established Australian distributor Home Entertainment Suppliers Pty Ltd (HES) and an official NRL licensee. The company made its industry debut in 2003 with the record-breaking NRL Rugby League game for PS2, XBOX and PC. Photo Credit: ClassicReload
