DID YOU KNOW
Breakout was an arcade game developed and published by Atari, Inc and released on 13 May 1976. It was conceived as a Nolan Bushnell/Steve Bristow partnership and built by Steve Wozniak with the help of Steve Jobs. Breakout was a stable mate of the earlier Alan Alcorn creation, ‘Pong.’ The Bushnell spec for Alcorn was simple: create a game with one moving spot, two paddles, and digits for score keeping.
Influences
Breakout would also influence Space Invaders (SI). SI creator Tomohiro Nishikado adopted the high scores and stages that Breakout used and later admitted in interviews that his game was Breakout with bricks that moved and shot back. Not only did Breakout influence Space Invaders but much of what Wozniak learnt during its creation would later shape his development of the Apple II computer.
